Fort Sumter Attacked

It seems to me that my fears of a war have been confirmed with the firing of Fort Sumter today. I do not wish for the nation to be divided, but I do wish for the abolition of slavery and the success of my husband in his role as the leader of this nation. He is currently calling for volunteers to increase the ranks of our forces. While he continues to do his duty, I must do mine; entertaining political guests at the White House is not an easy feat. The condition of our new home was disgraceful when we moved in; the first thing I think must be cleaned up are the tobacco stains on the walls. I have started renovation immediately to make it more fit for guests. After all, the home of the President of the United States ought to be a grand place.

  1. Mrs. Lincoln, I realize that your family ties have you torn over this war. Keep in mind that Sojourner Truth's thoughts and prayers are with you that you may remember those slaves that you do so want to free, also have families. They, however, do not even have the option of whether to sever ties with family members or not. Decisions are always made for them. Please, Mrs. Lincoln, help them attain the simplest of freedoms and remain loyal to your husband's cause.

  2. Ms. Truth, I assure you that I will remain loyal to this cause. I am actually trying to set up a fund to help contraband, and my dressmaker, who is also one of my closest friends, is a former slave. I will always remain devoted to ending the atrocious institution of slavery.

  3. To be quite honest with you Mrs. Lincoln, as soon as your husband was elected we all knew a war was on the horizon. A sad time it is indeed, the day we begin firing on each other.

  4. I agree with your sentiments on the war. The abolition of slavery is a goal that makes this war worthwhile, although war is always a last resort. I would also have preferred a more peaceful resolution, but now that it has come to war, we must succeed.
